Songlines Music Awards 2013!

Songlines magazine announced its nominations for the 2013 Songlines Music Awards – with Ravi Shankar nominated for Best Artist for The Living Room Sessions Part 1! The awards, voted by Songlines readers and the general public, endeavour to celebrate and acknowledge the myriad of musical talents across the world. All the nominated artists have had albums reviewed in Songlines during 2012. Profiles of nominees will be published in the April/May issue of Songlines (#91), on sale from March 15. Ravi Shankar to receive ‘Tagore Award for Cultural Harmony’

The late sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar is to receive the first ‘Tagore Award for Cultural Harmony’ instituted by the Government of India. President Pranab Mukherjee announced the award as he addressed the first joint sitting of the budget session of Parliament today. During 2012, government commemorated the 150th Birth Anniversaries of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, Madan Mohan Malaviya and Motilal Nehru apart from undertaking preparatory work for observing the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda and the centenary of the Gadar movement. The Recording Academy awarded Ravi Shankar’ last recording, The Living Room Sessions Part I, the Grammy Award for Best World Music Album. The album was recorded in his home in Encinitas, California with Tanmoy Bose. He had a lot of fun recording it and all of use at East Meets West Music are proud of the Maestro, his life and legacy! Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awarded to Ravi Shankar

The Recording Academy awarded the Lifetime Achievement award to the Ravi Shankar on February 9th at the 55th Grammy Awards Ceremony – something he learned of with delight and gratitude just one week before his passing in December of 2012. Starting in the early decades of the 20th century as a member of his brother Uday’s dance troupe, the Maestro’s career spanned some of the most important eras of East-West world music collaboration. But it is with great joy that we celebrate his life of 92 years and its uncompromising dedication to musical collaboration beyond national boundaries, virtuosity in every creative endeavor and a fundamental love of Gurukul teaching on Indian classical music forms. The Living Room Sessions Part 1

In October 2011, at the age of 91, Ravi Shankar invited his long-time tabla accompanist, Tanmoy Bose, to his home in Encinitas, California for an informal recording session. Over four days in Shankar’s living room, they recorded seven different ragas. The resulting music is pure Shankar, combining his deep musical experience and brilliant technique with the passion he brings to live performance.
