Ravi Shankar to receive ‘Tagore Award for Cultural Harmony’
The late sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar is to receive the first ‘Tagore Award for Cultural Harmony’ instituted by the Government of India. President Pranab Mukherjee announced the award as he addressed the first joint sitting of the budget session of Parliament today. During 2012, government commemorated the 150th Birth Anniversaries of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, Madan Mohan Malaviya and Motilal Nehru apart from undertaking preparatory work for observing the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda and the centenary of the Gadar movement. The Recording Academy awarded Ravi Shankar’ last recording, The Living Room Sessions Part I, the Grammy Award for Best World Music Album. The Recording Academy awarded the Lifetime Achievement award to the Ravi Shankar on February 9th at the 55th Grammy Awards Ceremony – something he learned of with delight and gratitude just one week before his passing in December of 2012. But it is with great joy that we celebrate his life of 92 years and its uncompromising dedication to musical collaboration beyond national boundaries, virtuosity in every creative endeavor and a fundamental love of Gurukul teaching on Indian classical music forms.
